CHISOM SELECTED FOR GB EURO TEAM

As expected key squad member Chisom Nwafor yesterday received a call from the Great Britain Team selectors to represent Great Britain in the European U18 Championships in July in Jerusalem.

Chisom had qualified in two events : the Long Jump with a seasons best of 6.18 (6.22w) (qualifying standard 6.00m) and the U18 Heptathlon having won the National Trials in Bedford 2 weeks ago with 5316 points. The qualifying standard for this event was 5200 points but what is more impressive is this performance was on par with the likes of Kathrina Johnson=Thompson, Denise Lewis and Morgan Lake at the same age.

The timetable for the competition meant combining both events would have been very difficult and following discussions yesterday with GB Team Management, Chisom was offered her first choice the Heptathlon.

Currently she ranks fifth in Europe in this event and because of the European dominance of this event fifth in the world. While the standard of the athletes ahead of her is exceptional, and she would probably have a better chance of a medal in the Long Jump, this was a choice with a view very much to the future.

More details to follow.
